OBESITY thought to increase the risk of someone stricken with migraines, the most recent health problems related to the condition of the body that is too heavy, so the opinion of some U.S. experts on Thursday as reported by Reuters.
People aged 22 to 55 years old and overweight, with abdominal fat by size or by using a standard body mass index with a base one's body weight and height, were more likely to report that they suffer from migraine or severe headache.
A total of thirty-seven percent of women with very large abdominal circumference as determined by measuring waist reported they had suffered such a headache, while women who are not overweight constituted 29 percent.
For men, 20 percent of men who have very large stomachs they reported suffering from migraines, migraine sufferers were among men who do not have belly fat amounted to 16 percent. The findings were based on data from 22,000 people polled in a survey of the health of the U.S. government.
"Now we must consider carefully, if people who lose weight, we can scientifically prove that it helps reduce headaches," said dr. Lee Peterlin from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, one of the researchers, in an interview.
"We know that various studies have shown sports and physical activity helps health. So logical to suppose that it might actually improve the headache," said Peterlin, whose findings were presented at a meeting planned for the upcoming American Academy of Neurology in Seattle.
Migraines are severe headaches that also may include nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. The disease more commonly suffered by women and often affect many families.
The disease had attacked as many as 30 million people in the United States, or 10 percent of Uncle Sam's country, according to data from the National Headache Foundation. Headache is more often experienced by people aged between 20 and 45 years, the group said.
The study found that after people aged 55 years, increased risk of migraine for people who are overweight no longer exists.
The researchers tried to explain the relationship between migraine and obesity after some early studies produced conflicting findings
